Ted woke up, still on top of Haley, who was struggling to get out from under him. Smoke filled the hallway, several people coughing.

“You okay, honey?” Haley asked.

“I’m good,” he said. “You?”

“I’m not hurt,” she said.

Ivan rushed into the hallway with Sam and Erica, Jerry hot on their heels.

“What the hell happened?” Ivan asked, his eyes darting around.

“Somebody brought food in,” Haley said. “Nobody knew who it was, then Ted realized we’d better move fast. It blew as we were running away.”

“Oh no!” shouted Alex. “Dad! Oh God.”

Ivan’s eyes got wide, and he rushed towards the ruined conference room, seeing Sparky and Dana bloodied and lying on the floor. Tex rushed over from the far side of the door with Karen, Dick, Ned, Clara, Bryan, and Brianna.

“What happened?” Ivan asked.

“They killed my dad,” Alex said, breaking into sobs, cradling his lifeless body.

“Oh no,” Ivan said. “Are you hurt?”

Alex looked up at him, shaking his head no.

The sound of gunfire floated towards them from the tunnel outside.

“Shit, this ain’t over yet,” Tex shouted. “Who’d we lose?”

“Cody and Allison both bought it,” Ted said, after looking at them. “Sparky and Dana are injured, but they’re both still breathing.”

“We’d better go nail those guys, or we’ll all be dead,” Tex said, getting up. “Everybody know where their weapons are?”

“I’m going too,” Alex said, getting up, resolve bursting through the hurt.

“No, you find a place to hide out,” Ivan said. “Now. We can’t lose both of you. Hell, either of you were worth more to the world than any of us.”

“Let’s debate that later,” Ted said, picking up his PPL, slinging his M4 over his shoulder, the others grabbing their weapons and running down the hallway towards the back. “Ivan, get Alex to a safe place now!”

“Wait!” Bryan shouted. “I see some folks rushing towards the building from the parking lot. We need M60s over here.”

“Yeah,” Brianna shouted.

“We’re on that,” Dick said. “Ned and Clara are with me, and we have the big stuff over here.”

Bryan rushed into the ruined conference room, opening up with an M60, Brianna joining in, Ned and Dick running to the turnstile gate and firing as well, blowing the hell out of the enemy and blasting the two vans sitting on the parking lot.

Tex looked at Ted and Sam on the other end of the hall as more gunfire erupted from the back lot. “Come on, let’s go waste these losers.”

“We’re with you,” Ted said.

“Let me at them,” Erica said, checking the magazine in her ornate AK-47, rushing out ahead of everybody else, Sam trying to catch up.

“It’s not good to piss her off,” Tex quipped, following them with the others.

Ivan dialed up 9-11 to get an ambulance on the way, then grabbed Alex by the arm. “C’mon, let’s go. Safest place you know of. Now.”

Alex reluctantly agreed, and they headed towards the lab area, Alex leading the way.

“B7, I’m moving to the vacuum chamber area. I want live video from all working cameras fed there, and I want to know about any other enemy fighters approaching.
